Your Lyin’ Eyes (road trip!)

August is birthday month for my family and friends. Countless numbers of birthdays. Last weekend, the Lovely Lainey and I decided to drive to south Florida to celebrate the weekend with sister Joan who, guess what, had another birthday. I don’t ask the age of ladies because I don’t want them to lie to me.

Nonetheless, on the drive south, I was riding shotgun and fiddlin’ with the radio. A talk show host caught our attention while he was discussing politicians and the lies they tell. That sparked a lively discussion as Lainey and I both discussed our parents and how sacrosanct they regarded truth, honesty and integrity and their reputations in both their personal and business lives. They chose respect over dishonor.

The Old Normal

Our parents were first generation born children of immigrants from Sicily, Italy (Lainey) and Baden-Wurttemburg (Schwarzwald /Black Forest Area), Germany, me. We discovered we have something in common as we surely do with many people of our age group. You know, us stupid, old farts who have no clue what a computer or the internet is; and cannot possibly understand what it is like to live in this futuristic society. After all, we inhabited the gloomy caves of the pre-technology Dark Ages of the 20th Century.

What we truly cannot understand is how “the New Normal” consists of values that are opposite of what we knew and respected even as we were struggling our way into adulthood. Old parents taught us clichés like “honesty is the best policy;” “your word is your bond;” “look a person straight in the eye when speaking to them;” and “a firm handshake is a sacred contract.”

The New Normal

Our enlightened youth of today conducts their relationships and business by email or texts. Sometimes, they actually call someone on their smart phones, which they don’t use as phones but as machines to avoid looking someone in the eye, or extending a firm handshake to convey straightforwardness and respect. Duplicity is now treasured more than a good reputation.

Since religion and loyalty are now scorned in our technocratic, progressive society, it serves no purpose to be authentic and truthful. One does not need to look one in the eye anymore. I wonder if anyone ever thinks of the Ten Commandments since we have been programmed into thinking they are not to be displayed publicly in buildings or courthouses. I was instructed to respect others when I learned such mundane things as the 8th Commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (A Traditional Catechetical Formula) or the 9th Commandment if one refers to: Exodus 20 2-17 or Deuteronomy 5:6-21 in the Old Testament.

For those who are offended by religion, some dictionary definitions (when not referring to reclining, etc.) of “lie” or “lying” are:

(1) a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

(2) something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture.

(3) an inaccurate or false statement; a falsehood.

(4) to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly, as with intent to deceive.

(5) to express what is false; convey a false impression.

Synonyms:  prevarication falsification prevaricate fib

Antonym:  truth

Some examples/idioms:

(1) to bring about or affect by lying (often used reflexively).

(2) to lie oneself out of a difficulty; accustomed to lying her way out of difficulties.

(3) give the lie to.

(4) to accuse of lying; contradict.

(5) to prove or imply the falsity of; belie.

(6) His poor work gives the lie to his claims of experience.

(7) lie in one's throat /teeth, to lie grossly or maliciously.

(8) If she told you exactly the opposite of what she told me, she must be lying in her teeth.

(9) Also, lie through one's teeth.

History is littered with liars; deceivers; pretenders; impostors; hypocrites; perjurers; swindlers; and cheaters. We have all known liars in our lives. We have all observed politicians who lie. Richard Nixon comes to mind. But when did this art of deception become fashionable? When did it become acceptable? When did it become praiseworthy and commendable?

When William Jefferson Clinton lied to Congress and to “We the People,” a part of the country was appalled. They could not accept it, while those of his ideology and members of his political party, lauded him for the sole reason that they could not acknowledge that the man they worshipped and adored could commit a sin; could deceive them. The new normal was thereby adopted into American culture. We could live with the lie, if our guy told the lie. This is when the Muckster saw the national divide become a chasm. An abyss so wide and deep that it cannot be healed.

Mission Accomplished

The political establishment got just what they wanted. They split us apart. They now had complete domination over us and they could now whip us into a hateful frenzy against each other as they stand by and gloat over how they have enslaved us. They used the cleaver of political correctness to control us.

We are in the midst of a vicious presidential campaign. Both major candidates have approval ratings of less than fifty percent. One has a penchant for saying stupid stuff that the mainstream media will seize upon in order to denigrate his every word and to twist those words to mean whatever fits their narrative. The other has demonstrated that she is an accomplished liar. The dishonest mainstream media celebrates her every deception and worships her “lyin eyes.”

Hillary+Clinton+Tim+Kaine+Take+Campaign+Bus+YkckD6t7ZZtlWhat Difference at this time does it make, Hillary?

To the “ABC” (Anybody But Clinton) supporters . . . the truth means everything.

To the “WAC” (We Adore Clinton) supporters . . . relish the deceit. They want more lies and more trickery. That is their winning formula, and they know it. They cannot win on ideas, so they support whatever will win. The end justifies the means, no matter how fraudulent and devious the lies are. Hillary, you can't hide your lyin' eyes

The late, great Glen Frey and Don Henley wrote this song in the seventies. I am using some poetic license to adapt their prophetic lyrics to today’s culture.

Clinton girls just seem to find out early
How to lie with a great big smile
A rich old political supporter
And she won't have to worry
She'll dress up in pant suits and go out in style

Late at night a big old hotel gets lonely
I guess every form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is only
Given to a banker with hands as cold as ice

So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To give a speech to an old friend who's feelin' down
But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin'
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin eyes

On the other side of town a rich contributor is waiting
With fiery eyes and favors no one could steal
She drives on through the night anticipating
'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel

She rushes to his arms; they fall together
She whispers that it's only for awhile
She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes

She gets up and pours herself a strong one,
And stares out at the patron and the jackal.
Another night, it's gonna be a long one.
She draws the shade and lifts her head to cackle.

She wonders how it ever got this crazy.
She thinks how she planned this all out in school.
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy?
She's so far gone she feels just like this is cool.

My oh my, you sure know how to arrange things.
You set it up so well, so carefully.
Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things?
You're still the same old girl you used to be.

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
Hillary, you can't hide your lyin' eyes

A Crisis of Character

You won’t find leadership on this cheatin’ side of town. It is now all about who will buy the loftiest fairytale. Forget the bogus rhetoric of who will fight the hardest battle for you; who will let women have abortions; who will nominate the best Supreme Court Justice; who will make the best deals; who will exterminate ISIS first; or who will make America Great Again, unless it is still great. Forget the convention platforms. Oh, you already did. No problem there. Nobody remembers what they were. They never do what they say they are going to do anyway. Ain’t gonna happen! They all lie. It is all about who will vote for the lie they want to believe. These are the only two real choices you have when you vote:

Clinton: for a huge expansion of the welfare state; and tells lies, or

Trump: a small expansion of the welfare state; and says stupid stuff.

The choice is yours. Choose the liar you wish to worship and adore. Reach in your pocket and count out how much of your children’s allowance you want to pay for these senseless fibs; hold your nose; and then vote the option you think is the best course for America and the future of your children and grandchildren.

If you are asking for solutions and leadership, I have twenty “real” answers for you in 20/20: A Clear Vision for America. (67.9) (6.5)

God Bless us all and God Save America. Our Constitution, our culture, or country, our civilization, our currency and our children need you now more than ever.

Finally, an author who brings you solutions, instead of problems.

Americans have lost faith in their overreaching federal government. “We the People” don’t need to be overregulated or have their taxes misspent. Americans are victims of a crumbling economy, high prices and stagnant wages. They view government as bloated and politicians as corrupt.

They do not trust the leadership at any level. They see politicians of both parties as self-centered narcissists whose only objective is re-election. The author is like you, with one principal difference and 20 reasons for optimism. His “Vision” of America is “clear.” It is a vision of the Constitution and America the way it could be, the way it should be. The author’s eyesight is twenty-twenty.
